Flying out of Broome it is possible to see just how small this major
centre really is. |

For two and a half hours we fly south over deserted coastline and arid
bush |

Perth is lush and green and looks enormous compared to Broome |

We are met at the airport by Andy and Janine, new found relatives of
only three weeks |

Andy |

We had a quick coffee with them and it was on to Fremantle for our stay
with Doug |

Lucy is pleased to see us (I think!) |

Jeannie and Doug make us really welcome
|

Doug is pleased with his present - an original copy of the Times
published on his birth date |

The next morning Doug has us out on a bike ride!! |

the safe cycle ways of Fremantle are easy and it's thankfully quite cool
(well 22C rather than 43C) |

a fine pair of bums |

Doug's having fun |

Fremantle in the distance |

We reach South Beach |

and Jeanie joins us for breakfast |
 |

The full monty is enjoyed by all |

It's Melbourne Cup Day and Jeanie wears a fancy hat for her lunch |

Fremantle Harbour |
 |

Fremantle retains its old world charm |

A statue depicting one of the many immigrants who arrived at the wharf |

Doug shows Kairen the 'Welcome Wall' which records many of the thousands
who emigrated to Australia and arrived in Fremantle |

Doug, Joan, Wendy, Susan and Jean are recorded on the wall |

A submarine next to the new Maritime Museum |

We press on all the way to South Fremantle. A 20km round trip |

In the afternoon we drive 60km north to Mandaring Weir |

This dam retains water for pumping to Kalgoorli |
 |

It takes around 11 days for the water to reach its destination.
Around 90 million litres of water are pumped every day |

Originally the pumps were steam driven by these boilers |
 |
 |
 |

Jeanie arrives home and she's won two prizes for her hat! |
 |
 |

We celebrate the win with cream buns.... |

The end of a very busy and fun day |
