Fraser Island (Day 2)

Our full-day tour of the island was in this impressive 4x4 coach.  All the roads on the island are sand tracks.  The sand is incredibly fine and at times difficult to negotiate.

First stop was Stone Tool Sandblow, so called because the shifting sands, as they move, have given up ancient aborigine stone tools .

The whole island is shifting slowly as sand accumulates on the east side and is blown to the west.  Movement is around 1 metre a year but more is being added on the east than being lost on the west, hence the island is growing...slowly.

Seventy Five Mile Beach...
so called because....it's 75 miles long!

Well we couldn't resist it...we crossed the pilots palm with silver and took an aerial view of the island.
Laurie sat up front as co-pilot.

Wangoollba Creek
Also know as Invisible Creek  because it is very difficult to see the water as it is so clear and pure.  The white is sand on the bottom of the creek.

Pile Valley Trail
- a very pleasant 30 minute walk through the forest.

Lake McKenzie

One of the top ten beaches in the world.  This 'perched' fresh water lake has water that is crystal clear and sand so fine that you can polish your jewelry with it. It is definitely the most spectacular lake we have ever seen.

Back at Kingfisher Bay - the nightly exhibition by the Rainbow Lorikeets as the sun prepares to set.
They swarm around showing green, then blue and flashes of red in the sunlight...it's pretty and noisy too!
