Cairns to Brisbane For this leg of the journey we decided to indulge and take the train for the next two days. We traveled 1700 km along the Queensland east coast, passing through some of the most diverse and beautiful countryside in Australia. We boarded the Sunlander train that makes the journey twice a week. Settled in Queenslander Class which is an Australian version of the Orient Express we had first class accommodation and dining throughout the two days.
The Sunlander celebrated its 50th year of operation in 2003.

An early morning start at Cairns Railways Station |
With
just 24 passengers in our section of the train (four carriages) we had plenty of space
to enjoy the scenery. The train travels at a very sedate average
of 50kmh (30mph) and the whole experience is relaxed and 'no rush'.

The Cane Cutter's Bar |
Is this comfy or what? The rooms are specially designed for both day and night comfort and convenience. We have a washbasin, vanity unit, wardrobes a desk space and we even get to keep the very nice bathrobes! (not nicked either)

Laurie catches up on the website |
We make frequent stops and we get off to enjoy the sunshine and stretch our legs.
|
Outside the window we see everything from the tall stalks of endless sugar cane to the spiky greenery of the pineapple plantations, from parched grazing land to the lushness of the tropical rainforest.

Robbie Dunn is on-board to provide live entertainment before and after each meal.
